1578 lurking underneath Rome amongst the catacombs, Skeletons adorned in precious jewels are unveiled. Revealing the bones of early martyrs of Christianity, The residents believed these skeletons to be Saints since their were strange goings on such as ‘Miracles’ and so forth. Intrigued? So was I! How ever one can call history a subject of ‘Boredom’ is beyond me.
They were mainly transported to Germany (Land of Beethoven, Bach and many other a priceless relic - A land that in my eyes most befits their beauty) replacements of stolen / broken relics during the resurrection of Protestantism. Protestantism was a term that referred to the letter of protestation by Lutheran princes against the decision of the Diet of Speyer in 1529. Were the skeletons always adorned in such a way? No. They were fashioned in this sense after they reached their final destination, robed as a reminder of death at exhibitions within Churches - Giving reason as to why one should devote a life to god. Now, I am not religious and am openly a proud Atheist but can appreciate such finery especially when it addresses the issue of ‘Macabre’, one of my favourite subjects. How we can so easily become ‘Human interrupted’ with death and the fear it inflicts upon us.
Where did I discover such curiosities? In a book. Surprise…surprise. These majestic photographs were captured by art historian and the man behind ‘this book’, Paul Koudounaris (copyright owner of the images supplied also) who sought out what was left of these bony beings unknowing that he would discover that some had yet to be displayed for public viewing!
The book can be purchased here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0500251959/ref=as_li_ss_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=0500251959&linkCode=as2&tag=sobasogo-20 and I will not speak any further about it, so as to allow you to delve in deeper. To discover just what it is that fascinated me so much as to mention it here. - Siân Lavinia Hülme
